Emerging Issue Facing Indian Country
The President has requested that federal funds allocated to Indian Affairs be diverted within the framework of the law. This is highly concerning, as these funds, established by Congress, are critical to tribal budgets. Any changes to these allocations will be detrimental and create a damaging precedent. This must be challenged, and we must unite behind our common interests. Education funding shortfalls in one area must be compensated for by diverting funds from elsewhere in the budget. Our treaty rights and trust relationship with the federal government are fundamental to our ability to govern and maintain our boundaries. We rely on the federal government to remain a trusted partner and to uphold our rights enshrined in legislation, federal policy, and historical contexts.
Native birthrights have been challenged in federal courts in 2025. My tenure as Tribal Councilman will focus on standing up for the rights of every Cherokee and Native American in Indian Country, be it in Oklahoma, Colorado, or New York.
Now, more than ever, a renewed focus on protecting our rights, treaties, and self-determination must be at the top of our minds. As we saw with hunting and fishing compacts, making up lost ground is not easy. We must ensure we give up no ground in the coming years. We must remain dedicated to preserving the things we have enjoyed in our lives, keep them intact, and make them stronger for the generation we are now raising.
There is no other candidate more aware of this danger and prepared to take action. I humbly ask for your trust to navigate us through this uncertain time
Update - 2/17/25: SIPI and Haskell University have lost 20% of staff due to Federal Grant cuts and Layoffs. This development is concerning but puts into perspective how different 2025 is shaping up to be - setting a worrying tone for the next several years.
Update - 2-19-25: Haskell Indian Nations Basketball coach left unpaid due to complications with funding but will continue the season without pay. Tribes, like ours should be proud to step in and make every effort possible to reach out to the leaders who dedicate their lives to our children and do whatever is practical. We should lead by supporting all communities in Indian Country.
